Guppie & Me:
Ages 6 months to 3 years with a parent. Introduces children to the water and teaches swimming readiness skills.
Ages 3-5. First experience in the water without an adult. No water skills needed.
Accomplished Sunfish. Feels comfortable in water. Submerges nose,mouth, and eyes. Jumps into shoulder deep water with support. Front and back floats with or without support. Starting to incorporate arm and leg action.
Accomplished Sailfish. Opens eyes under water and retrieves objects. Combines arm and leg actions on front and back.
Red Cross Learn To Swim
Ages 5 and up.
Level 1 Beginner:
Introduction to water skills.
Level 2 Beginner:
Fundamental aquatic skills. Accomplished Level 1. Enters independently. Travels min. 5 yards, bobs 5 times, exits safely.
Level 3 Intermediate:
Stroke development. Level 2 skills accomplished. Steps from side into chest deep water, pushes off bottom, moves into treading or floating position for min. 15 seconds. Swims in front and back for 5 body lengths, exits water. Can move from 15 second back stroke, roll to front and recover to vertical position. Pushes off and swims using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, rolls to back, floats for 15 seconds, rolls to front, continues to swim 5 body lengths.
Level 4 Intermediate:
Stroke development. Level 3 skills accomplished. Jumps into deep water from the side, recover to surface, maintain position by treading or floating for 1 minute, rotate 1 full turn, orient,level off, swim front crawl and/or elementary backstroke 15 yards, exits.
Level 5 Advanced:Stroke refinement. Level 4 skills accomplished. Performs a feet first entry into deep water, swims front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary, swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Swims breaststroke for 15 yards, changes direction, repositions, swim back crawl for 15 yards. Submerge and swim a distance of 3-5 body lengths under water without hyperventilating, return to surface, exit.
Level 6 Advanced:Stroke refinement. Level 5 skills accomplished. Performs shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards, while using appropriate and efficient turning style throughout. Swim breaststroke for 25 yards, change direction and position of travel, swim back crawl for 25 yards, while using appropriate and efficient turning styles.
